What scared you as a child?

I was watching cartoons on NickJR with my daughter yesterday. Most were quite sweet, but one came on that kinda creeped me out. It starred colorful talking CGI insects with anthropomorphized human-like faces. I don’t think they bothered my baby girl as much as they did me.

Apparently adults of various ages when asked to list TV shows and films they were scared of when they were kids listed some of those pictured below. Clearly not all were actually meant to be scary. And some of them are only scary looking back as adults. Here are just a few samples:

The Muppets... really Michael Jackson - Thriller

Pee Wee Herman Wizard of Oz

Child vampire from Salems Lot Ursula from Little Mermaid

Dark Shadows Willy Wonka
(bonus points if you can name all eight)

So, how about you… what scared you as a child? Are there any of today’s shows that scare your children… or you?

  1. The witch in The Wizard of Oz!!! She was SCARY! And freaked me out big time. Also the flying monkeys…. 🙂

  2. I’m with you on that, Shannon. I remember hiding behind my fathers chair when the “Great and Powerful Oz” made his first appearance. And those winged monkeys weirded me out. Thanks for dropping by. Have a great day!

  3. Recently, Kayleigh (6 years old now) watched the cheesy Clash of the Titans from the 80s. Medusa’s glowing eyes scared the heck out of her. Nightmares for DAYS. No fun!

    1. I can totally see that as scary for a little one. When the “great and powerful Oz” first made his appearance in the Wizard of Oz, it always spooked me… that and those darned flying monkeys. I saw a commercial last night for the new 3D Clash of the Titans. Kayleigh’s probably too young, but maybe she’d like being scared by it some day.

p.s. I just looked up and Molly was enraptured by “Spiderus” on “Miss Sunny’s Spidey Patch Friends”. He’s seriously creepy, I tell you! I guess Molly likes the human like face. eeeew!

  4. The incrediable Hulk! the minute he turned green I was out of there my older brothers used to tease me and block or lock the door so I couldnt get out and Id hide behind the couch and when he stopped being green Id come out again! lol

Also, remember going to see ET in the cinema when it came out and my oldest brother kept telling me it was about an evil alien who ate kids so of course I didnt want to watch it and hid behind the seats and only started to watch the screen when I saw him eating the sweets and decided that he ate sweets not kids ….now its one of my favourite movies! 🙂

    1. LOL… so when he started eating Reese’s Pieces instead of kiddie brains you figured ET was okay? Haven’t seen that in years. Are you talking about the Bill Bixby as Dr. David Banner and Lou Ferrigno as the Hulk TV show? I suppose that would have been kinda scary for a wee tike.

  5. E.T. scared the heck out of me

    1. Apparently you were not the only one, Timmi. It’s funny, my daughter who just turned 4 is not scared of much at all. She tells me she’ll protect me if we watch a kids show with something mildly scary. 🙂

  6. Im 15, and im scared of the dark. its different if im with other people but if im alone i panic and think im being watched. and if i hear a sound its over, i freeze. i know im safe but i cant help but be scared.

    1. I’d guess it’s pretty common to feel that way, Michaela. I even know grown ups who feel like you do at times. I’m glad to hear you at least know you are safe, even if your fear gets the better of you sometimes. Don’t know if you watch scary movies or TV, but I am careful about what our daughter watches, as I tend to see a correlation between exposure to scary stuff, and being scared in her room at night. You should consider talking to a parent about how you feel. Sometimes just talking will help. Hang in there.
