Review: Ember Temperature Controlled Ceramic Mug

My wife just gave me the perfect gift for a coffee & tea lover like me, the Ember Ceramic Mug. If you haven’t heard about this fantastic bit of coffee mug technology yet, it was one of Time Magazine’s top inventions of 2017. Please note: this is not a sponsored post, but some links on my site to amazon.com are affiliate.

I don’t know about you, but I find myself often either pouring out half drunk, lukewarm coffee and tea… or worst drinking it anyway. I had a heated mug stand in the past, but it not only didn’t maintain the perfect temperature, but it also required I set the mug back on it after every sip.

The Ember Ceramic Mug and the Ember Travel Mug do not need to sit on a warming plate or charger during use. I linked the mug to my phone via Bluetooth and set my preferred temperature. Recommendation: set a different temperature for coffee versus tea for optimal taste.

I’ve used my Ember mug every day since my wife gave it to me on Christmas. When I’m not drinking from it I rinse it (hand-wash only) and put it on it’s saucer to charge. The saucer plugs into a regular wall plug, and I find I can enjoy 2 or 3 cups of piping hot coffee between charges.

You can purchase both the Ember Ceramic Mug and the Ember Travel Mug at some Starbucks’s locations (though I hear many sold out). To find locations you can buy yours visit ember.com. Warning: Some independent vendors on Amazon have been price gauging, so be careful not to overpay.

UPDATE: After living with the mug for several weeks now, here are a few additional observations:

  1. At a capacity of just over 8 ounces, the mug holds a bit less liquid than I’d prefer, especially if you plan to add milk or cream. You might want to look to their travel mug if you need more capacity.
  2. The inside bottom of the mug is easily scratched by metal spoons when stirring. The scratches then attract coffee stains that cannot be removed. [As noted previously: hand-wash only]
  3. Otherwise the mug is working well, maintaining my coffee’s perfect temperature, and I get complements when I’ve brought it to meetings in our conference room.
