I Left My Apple iPhone for a Lumia Windows Phone!

Has this happened to you? That moment of crystal clarity when the need for change becomes too urgent to resist. Well, I’m there now. No, I’m not moving to a remote mountain-top cave to gaze deeply into my belly button. Okay, I pictured that, and can I just say, “ewwww!” But I digress. Dear iPhone…

I’m going to be brutally honest here. The passion’s gone. It’s not that I don’t love you anymore. It’s just that I’m not in love with you. You are still as beautiful as they day we met… and no, that OtterBox Defender case doesn’t make your retina display look fat. Well, it kinda does, but that’s not the point.

I'm Breaking Up with My iPhone!

Please understand, it’s not you, it’s me. My needs have changed. I’m just not the same person I was when we met. I’ve something to tell you, and it’s going to hurt. I’m sorry, iPhone, but I’ve cheated on you. I didn’t mean for it to happen. What? It doesn’t matter what her name is. Fine, her name is Lumia 1020.

A friend introduced us. I was in Abu Dhabi, UAE, for for the the Nokia World announcements. The scent of exotic spices filled the air… or that could have been something the U.S. press contingent from the west coast was smoking? Anyway, there she was. I held her for the first time, and my life was forever changed.

I saw the world as if for the first time… in vivid, vibrant color. She accommodated my every need… focus, shutter speed, white balance… she did it all, and more. And with her 41 megapixels she took me places I’d never dreamed. I’m sorry, iPhone, but it’s over. Please… don’t cry. Moisture voids your warranty.

All kidding aside: While I was never an Apple Fanboy, I’ve really enjoyed my iPhone. However, I’ve realized something was missing. I don’t know about you, but I rarely carry a proper digital camera. I do, though, always have my cellphone with me, and almost all of my daughter’s milestones were captured on it.

The iPhone with it’s 8 MP camera makes it easy to take decent pictures and videos. It’s adequate for casual use, but if you truly care about capturing life’s memories… your child’s first steps, your travel adventures… really any of life’s moments, you should consider a switch to the 41 MP Lumia 1020.

UPDATE 2 Weeks Later: I finally moved on from my first love, the iPhone. But the heart is a fickle master. While I still adore the Lumia 1020, Nokia just came out with a new windows phone, the Lumia 1520… and, yep, my head was turned yet again.  Ulitmately it was this new one I switched to. Let me know if you’d like to know why? In the meantime you can read more about the Lumia 1520 here if you want.

What do YOU use, and have you ever considered making a switch?

HAHA. This is great. I love the fact that you are leaving for another woma….I mean phone

    1. 🙂 Thanks, Scott. I hope my wife doesn’t read anything into this! 😉 I went to a Halloween party with my daughter yesterday and was totally disappointed with the photos I took on my iPhone. The lighting was tricky (for an iPhone). It would have been super easy to capture it if I’d already had my new Lumia 1020.

  1. I knew it!

I had an inkling when you were at #NokiaWorld…I mean, it really must have been love at first sight – as much as you don’t want to admit it.

Can I say I told you so? Welcome to the Android side, my friend. You’ll like it here. 😉

    1. Ooops. I just realized the Nokia Lumia 1020 is a Windows phone. Still a good switch!

    2. Thanks, Charmin! I was pleasantly surprised how quickly I adapted to Windows on the Lumia. I’m not a big fan of IOS 7, and found I rather like Windows. Clearly Apple is going to be asking for my fanboy card back. 😉 Thanks so much for dropping by. Probably already told you, but love your site! Have a super Halloween!

  2. once you get it you will have to do an updated review. Let us know is she’s still as awesome as you 1st thought.

    1. 😉 I don’t want all my friends with inferior phones to feel bad now, Mitzi. I’m kidding, of course. There are many excellent phones available, but if you are a photographer, as I know you are, this is one you might want with you when you’re not carrying that 20lb camera bag.

      1. ah yes…the camera bag does get a bit of a burden at times. They don’t offer this phone with Verizon…I already checked after your iphone break up 😉 (which I still have)

  3. Literally the article that came up before yours in my Feedly. The last sentence says exactly why my next phone to photograph my son will be an iPhone 5s:

    http://blog.laptopmag.com/iphone-5s-vs-lumia-1020-camera

“The iPhone 5s conclusively beat the Nokia Lumia 1020 in our photo face-off, taking seven out of 10 rounds–and tying one. Even after updating the Lumia 1020′s camera software, which reduced issues with the blue color cast on many images, colors were still more accurate on the iPhone. Apple’s device also excelled when delivering detail and contrast.

The advantage that the Lumia 1020 has is that you can recompose your shot after you take it because of the phone’s very high 41-MP resolution. Overall, though, the iPhone 5s snapped better-looking images in a wider range of conditions.

To be fair, the Lumia 1020 offers much greater control over individual settings, letting the user manually adjust ISO, shutter speed, white balance and more. ****However, when it comes to being able to whip your phone out of your pocket and fire off a quick shot or two — the way most smartphone cameras are used — the iPhone 5s is the better everyday smartphone camera.****

    1. Thanks so much for sharing this, Jeremy. I think it makes a good point. My experience the other day trying to take photos on my iPhone in at a school room party with bright light coming in windows overwhelming the iPhone’s sensors was quite frustrating. I had to use PhotoShop on my phone to edit them before sharing. The Lumia would have handled that easily without any postprocessing. That said, for many who are taking photos without much motion/blurring & in good light, the iPhone should be perfectly adequate. Again, really appreciate your comment! The more information consumers have the better! 🙂

  4. Michael ~
I must say that I am deeply disappointed. I never figured you for a cell phone philanderer. But, then again, you are a man, and the moment a young, fresh, made up face bats her shutter at you, you are smitten.

I’ll still read, but this experience will forever be etched in my memory, reminding me you have gone to the dark, albeit photographically brighter, side.

    😉

P.S. Love the post, and hope you loved the trip!

    1. I’m so sorry I’ve let you down, Mary Kathryn. I never meant for it to happen. Love is fickle. 😉

  5. Nice piece Michael, hope you feel the same once you get to use a 1020 full time, at least it should set up ok now you have a Windows account 🙂 Nice to meet you in Abu Dhabi

    1. Hi Stephen! It was grand meeting you in Abu Dhabi, and I really appreciated your help as I first learned to navigate windows on that Lumia. I’ve actually got my eye on one of the new Lumia phones they announced, as well. Yeah, I’m fickle. 😉 Loved the ocean photos you shared today, btw. I agree, they captured the colour of the sea quite well. Thanks so much for dropping by! Cheers.

i cannot relate here. i lOVE iphone and all my apple products!!!

    1. I understand, Alicia. I have an iPhone, an iPad, an iTouch and an iPod Nano. LOL. As such this is not a decision I’m making lightly. Family photos are so important to me, I need something better for when I don’t have a DSLR with me. The camera you use is the one you have with you. And recently almost all the software I care about runs on the Lumia phones. 🙂 Enjoy your Apple products. They’re super, but not their phone is not the right product for me any more. I’m tempted to trade in my iPad, too, btw.

      1. If you do trade in your Ipad what would you get ??
A windows tablet ? surface ? or android device
        Mark

        1. Hi Mark. I got a Windows RT 8.1 tablet… specifically a Lumia 2520. I don’t have a sim card in it right now, so am just using it on WiFi, but love it. Have not gotten rid of my iPad, though. Most apps I want are available on Window 8 or coming, but there are a few I like that aren’t. What do you use?
