Huge List of Special Characters for Facebook & Twitter

Tuesday’s Technical Tip:

Sometimes I add special characters to my Facebook and Twitter updates. Have you seen people do this? I do it for fun, or when I want to send some ♥ Love ♥,  or to draw ★ Attention ★ to something. Use them sparingly, though; a little goes a long way and can get annoying to others.

Huge listing of Special UTF-8 Characters for use with Facebook, Twitter, etc.

There is an International Keyboard option called “Emoji” you can add to your smartphone (instructions at the bottom of this page on how to add that to an iPhone), but I often just cheat and copy & paste characters like the following out of a file I built. It’s not elegant, but it works.

Feel free to bookmark (Ctrl-D) this page, and use it to copy special characters for your updates:

Tip: To add that special Emoji keyboard I mentioned above to your iPhone, simply select the Settings icon, then General, then Keyboards, then International keyboards, then Add New Keyboard, and add Emoji from the list. After that, any time you’re typing on your iPhone you can click on the little globe on your phone’s keyboard to switch between English and Emoji. Let me know if you have any questions.

[important]Also, let me know if this was helpful. I may add a technical tips post every so often, e.g. how to get a nice custom avatar to show up when you leave comments on peoples blogs, instead of some random default image?[/important]

  1. Such a great list! I have always wondered how others can type these characters on their phones, from now I can pimp my text messages as well! Thanks for sharing!

    1. Yep, if you add that special Emoji keyboard I mentioned above to your iPhone (I assume it works on most smartphones?) it’s a snap. Or if not on a phone or tablet, you can just come here and cut and past. I do that as often as not. Thanks for dropping by, Mira!

  2. Wow, this is really one extensive list! I will surely put some of these characters into good use.

    1. I did say it was “Huge”. 😉 Enjoy, Devon!

  3. Cool character kit, there are some really nice signs here! Thanks for sharing them, my chat messages are going to be really fun from now on!

    1. You’re welcome, Ninetta. I get questions about it a lot, so I thought I’d share a couple ways to use these in your Facebook updates and tweets. Just be sure to use them sparingly. A few go a long way. ツ

  4. Wow! Thank you for the effort of sharing these cool icons on your blog, I hope you did not have a hard time getting all these. 🙂 It is going to be more fun in Facebook and Twitter now 🙂

    1. You’re very welcome, Sarah. It did take a while to compile, but it’s really helpful for me now that I’ve got so many in one place now. Have fun!

I was wondering how people were sending all of those colored icons. Hadn’t seen them until I got my iPhone. Thanks for sharing this. Plus, if I’m lazy I can just bookmark this and come here. Hope the week’s going well. -JF

    1. I hear you, Joseph. Until a friend on Twitter shared the International Keyboard option called “Emoji”, I didn’t know how they did it either.

  5. Thank you!

    1. You’re very welcome. Enjoy!

  6. Is there any way to do an e with an umlaut? ( ë ) …I heard a rumor that Twitter ignores all the characters that appear after the umlaut.

    1. Nope, no worries with ë in Twitter, Rich. Just tested it. Actually I just saw that you did, too. If you’re typing it into email or something you should be able to hold down the [ALT] key and type 0203 (make sure number lock is on). Or you can add a different keyboard via your software settings, e.g. if you are using Windows XP it is done as follows. Go to the Control Panel and select “Date, Time, Language and Regional Options”. Pick the task “Add other languages”. That will open the “Regional and Language” window. Click on “Details”. This will open the “Text Services and Input Languages” window. Click the “ADD” button and it should open an “Add Input Language” window. From this window you can select whatever language you need. I’m on Windows 7, but don’t have time right now to test it, but image it’s very similar. Hope that helps!
