Giveaway: Green Eggs and Ham

This giveaway closed on on Friday October 8th at 10pm EDT. Please scroll to the end of this post to view the winner’s information and for a description of the selection process. Thank you all for your participation, and have a great week!

No, I’m not literally giving away green eggs and ham; though any of you who have had the misfortune to eat my cooking know that is not as unlikely as it sounds.

What I have the pleasure to give away as a brand new 50th Anniversary Edition of the classic Dr. Seuss book “Green Eggs and Ham”. As a disclaimer, the good folks at Random House did provide us two copies of the book, one to review and one to giveaway to a lucky reader. Disclaimers aside, I have read this book to my toddler since she was a baby on an almost nightly basis. She picks the books.

Green Eggs and Ham 50th Anniversary EditionUsing only fifty different words Dr. Suess created a classic children’s book fifty years ago. It encourages kids to read, and has also proven very helpful when I’m trying to get our toddler to try some new food. As many of you know, I’m very big on reading to ones children. I want my daughter to grow up with the love of reading I had as a child, and have read to her before tucking her into bed EVERY night since she was tiny. It’s special daddy-daughter time.

As I mentioned, my daughter is the one who picks out what books we read each night. She has a small library in her nursery from which she may choose. The reasons I’m so comfortable promoting this book are two fold. One: it is the book my sweet little girl picks most often for me to read (and then says “more”, meaning “please read it again” when I finish). And two: it is just plain fun to read! I love the way the rhymes trip off the tongue.

Sam I AmDo you remember when you first read or were read this delightful book? [spoiler alert] Sam-I-am persistently tries to convince the nameless skeptic he should try the titular green eggs and ham. Will he eat them in a house, with a mouse, in a box, with a fox, with a goat, on a boat, etc? How does it end? Will he try green eggs and ham? If he does will he like them? Well, that would give it away. If you don’t know, you’ll definitely want to get this book.

Before we get to my giveaway, I also wanted to make you aware of a really cool contest from the fun folks at Random House’s Seussville. Enter their HAM IT UP video contest by November 3rd and you will be eligible to win $2,000 cash, a limited edition Dr. Seuss print worth over $3,000, a year’s supply of ham from Ham-I-Am (really, I’m not kidding!), a Flip cam, and the entire Dr. Seuss library!  For details please visit Seussville.com.

  1. If I won, I would definitely read this book endlessly with my 2yo son who would gleefully call it the “Cat in the Hat” book.

    1. Hi, Lauren! Thanks so much for dropping by and entering the contest. My daughter often notices the photo on the back of this book and says in her stilted toddler speak, “CAT… HAT!”. Have you seen the new Cat in the Hat TV series on PBS? It just started airing last week. Have a great weekend.

(note: as much as I love this book, my comments will of course not count in the drawing next Friday)

  2. This was a childhood staple for me and I would love to have a copy to read to our little one, due in February! I’ve learned recently that babies who are read to in the womb remember the stories later – and it even helps with breastfeeding if a favourite story is read aloud before birth, then during nursing! This would be an awesome book for that!

Wow, I knew babies were found to recognize their parents (especially the mother’s voice) and even the language (due to cadence and such, I think) of the parents, but didn’t realize they could actually recognize a story. Very cool. Thanks for dropping by, Emily. Good luck! Oh, and congratulations on your pregnancy!

  3. tweet entry #2!

  4. Well my parents loved reading us this one, i think the pages were torn eventually cause we requested it.

Ps to this day I still dislike green eggs ,,,, and ham.

    1. LOL. Am I missing something? Is there really such a thing as green eggs and ham? Our wee one’s copy is getting a bit tattered, too. Oh, and the One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish has a whole on the first page where she tried to it at about 8 months of age. Really. I do encourage her to think of books as toys, but not as food. Hmmm.

  5. I’m a follower

  8. Your post reminds me of such wonderful memories. We are long time fans of Dr. Seuss. My kids always got to pick the book. When my son was a toddler, anytime someone sat on the floor he thought it was time to read so he would grab a book from his shelf and back into your lap to sit ready to read. Wonderful memory indeed.

    Have a great weekend!

    1. Books are such wonderful things, aren’t they; and are tied to so many lovely memories for many of us. I’ve always wanted my little girl to develop the love for books I had. I really appreciate you stopping by, Jill. Love your most recent blog. That photo collage of things that make you smile is a wonderful idea. We all should (whether graphically or just in a journal) take stock frequently of the things that make us smile. We’d all be so much happier for it. Thanks so much for sharing.

  9. I remember having it served in the cafeteria when I was in second grade. It looked terrible.

    1. Was it made with food coloring? I remember some pretty bad meals, but don’t remember ever being served green eggs and ham. Thanks for dropping by from Mom Loop. I’m off to visit your Book Tie-In of the Week blog. Have a great weekend, D!

  10. I won’t enter as we already have a well loved copy. But really a wonderful book. The kids just love when I get tongue tied reading Dr. Seuss. Hop on Pop is our favorite.

    1. I know what you mean, Elissa. There are some of my toddlers books I’d not part with for anything, including some where she ate part of the page as a baby. LOL. I’ll still include you in the drawing, and if you win you can let me what you’d like me to do with it. I could donate it to a public library for example? Thanks so much for dropping by. Have a great weekend!

      1. =)
Well figured I’d spice it up a bit! lol

  17. Love the button

  18. One more for the button! =)

  19. I subscribe to you…

  20. cause I don’t wanna miss what you have to say!

  21. My daughter loves “Green Eggs & Ham” and everything Dr. Seuss. When we picked her up from pre-k today, the first place she asked to go was to the library, probably to read more Dr. Seuss, lol! I remember my mom reading this to me as a kid, in fact I think she purchased a set of Dr. Seuss books for my sister and I. Mom never bought the good stuff in ones.

If I win this book, unfortunately I will not allow the little ones to touch it until they are old enough to understand how special this classic really is to me. I would hope they pass it down to their children also.

Thanks for stopping by my blog. I love what you’re doing over here!

  22. I just had to share another one of my Dr. Seuss faves. I read it to both girls before they were born, “Oh Baby, the Places You’ll Go!: A Book to Be Read in Utero” adapted from the works of Dr. Seuss by Tish Rabe. I still read this to my 6 month old and she loves it.

    1. “Oh Baby, the Places You’ll Go!: A Book to Be Read in Utero”

I think I’ve heard of this one, but we don’t have it. I appreciate the tip, and also your compliment earlier. Coming from a writer such as yourself it means a lot. Dr. Seuss did create a bit of a revolution in kids books. His were quite a departure from Dick and Jane and the little golden books of that era. Good luck in the giveaway. Have a great weekend!

Love Dr. Seuss! So much fun growing up on his books.

    Following from BF.

    1. Hey, there. Just visited your blog. If you want to come over and make an unplanned meal here, I’m sure my wife wouldn’t mind at all. The rhubarb compote adapted from Bon Appetit sounds great! Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

  23. I’m too old to remember.

    1. Barbara, thank you so much for dropping by my blog. One is never too old for Dr. Seuss. If you missed it first time around, perhaps you’ll win a 50th anniversary copy and get to know it now. Have a great weekend!

  24. I love Dr. Seuss! My favorite Seuss book has to be “The Lorax.”

    1. Hi. Thanks for dropping by. You’re in Seneca Falls, NY, right? I went to SUNY Brockport for a year many moons ago… on the other side of Rochester from you. Are the trees starting to turn yet? Per your comment, I heard Universal Studios and Illumination Entertainment are teaming up to produce a 3-D, CGI film based upon The Lorax. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

  25. I love Dr. Seuss! Those are the books I learned to read with. And then I read a lot to my daughter from the time I was pregnant. Yes, while I was pregnant I read to her. She loves to read! Now she has a son to read to. He tries to get as many books as he can read to him at night before bed. 🙂 I’d love to get him the whole Dr. Seuss collection. We don’t have many of those for him yet.

    1. Hi, Tammey. Thanks so much for stopping by my blog. Well, good luck on this giveaway. This would get you started on that collection. I have about five dogeared Seuss books. Green Eggs and Ham and One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish are our wee one’s favs. I read to her every night before bed, and she is always asking for one more… and then one more… and so on. 🙂

  26. I can’t believe I didn’t see this until now! I am so sorry!! Your email must have went to spam. =( Will be checking back so we can get in touch and I can give you my address!

    1. No worries. I just forwarded the original email. I lose email all the time. It’s hard to keep up with everything we have going on in our lives. Congratulations again. If you don’t get my email, simply click on the contact us tab on my blog and use the form to send it. It’s secure and comes only to me. It won’t get caught in my spam filter. Thanks.
