No, I’m not literally giving away green eggs and ham; though any of you who have had the misfortune to eat my cooking know that is not as unlikely as it sounds.
What I have the pleasure to give away as a brand new 50th Anniversary Edition of the classic Dr. Seuss book “Green Eggs and Ham”. As a disclaimer, the good folks at Random House did provide us two copies of the book, one to review and one to giveaway to a lucky reader. Disclaimers aside, I have read this book to my toddler since she was a baby on an almost nightly basis. She picks the books.
Using only fifty different words Dr. Suess created a classic children’s book fifty years ago. It encourages kids to read, and has also proven very helpful when I’m trying to get our toddler to try some new food. As many of you know, I’m very big on reading to ones children. I want my daughter to grow up with the love of reading I had as a child, and have read to her before tucking her into bed EVERY night since she was tiny. It’s special daddy-daughter time.
As I mentioned, my daughter is the one who picks out what books we read each night. She has a small library in her nursery from which she may choose. The reasons I’m so comfortable promoting this book are two fold. One: it is the book my sweet little girl picks most often for me to read (and then says “more”, meaning “please read it again” when I finish). And two: it is just plain fun to read! I love the way the rhymes trip off the tongue.
Do you remember when you first read or were read this delightful book? [spoiler alert] Sam-I-am persistently tries to convince the nameless skeptic he should try the titular green eggs and ham. Will he eat them in a house, with a mouse, in a box, with a fox, with a goat, on a boat, etc? How does it end? Will he try green eggs and ham? If he does will he like them? Well, that would give it away. If you don’t know, you’ll definitely want to get this book.
Before we get to my giveaway, I also wanted to make you aware of a really cool contest from the fun folks at Random House’s Seussville. Enter their HAM IT UP video contest by November 3rd and you will be eligible to win $2,000 cash, a limited edition Dr. Seuss print worth over $3,000, a year’s supply of ham from Ham-I-Am (really, I’m not kidding!), a Flip cam, and the entire Dr. Seuss library! A Daddy Blog is pleased to congratulate our winner: Nicole, author of My Mad World. The winner was selected at random using random.org which offers true random numbers to anyone on the Internet. The randomness comes from atmospheric noise, which for many purposes is better than the pseudo-random number algorithms typically used in computer programs. The service has existed since 1998 and was built and is being operated by Mads Haahr of the School of Computer Science and Statistics at Trinity College, Dublin in Ireland.
