Location Location Location: Where Would You Like to Wake Up Tomorrow?

Have kids limited or changed how you travel?

I love our house, don’t get me wrong, but sometimes it’s so… well, fixed. I rarely wake in the morning and find our home is not where it was when I went to sleep. There was the one incident when I was living in a dumpster, but that’s for another blog.

Most of you know I live in Dallas, but what some of you may not know (no I’m not going to talk about dumpsters) is that I grew up in New York, Amsterdam and Vienna. As such I got a taste for traveling. Since having a baby, though, that’s mostly on hold.

Travel Collage - London, San Francisco, Pisa, Seattle, Sydney, Rio de JaneiroWouldn’t it be nice if a house could be like a cruise ship, and each morning you’d wake and find yourself at some new and exciting port of call? Do you like to travel? Is it something you do regularly or are you putting it off for “someday”?

If money and circumstance were no object, where would you like to wake up tomorrow? Drop me a line…

  1. I would love to take my guys to Ireland and England. I have explored both and would love for them to see them too.

    1. That sounds super, D! My wife and I have both been to Ireland and England (me many times), and actually my wife was living in Ireland when we first became acquainted. Sounds like a great trip. So much history to explore. We can both give recommendations when you get to the point of going. They are high on our list of places to take our wee one when she’s old enough.

  2. I love to travel. And yeah, no far travel since having kids. Just as well I guess – it’s so expensive now!

I’ve always wanted to go to Peru. I know it’s strange and not the usual choice, but I love the mountains and Machu Picchu and the people look amazing. Maybe one day.

    1. Peru is not a strange place to want to go, Lisa. It’s certainly on my proverbial bucket list! I’ve several friends who’ve been to Machu Picchu, but though I’ve been to more than 30 countries, not yet Peru. We’ve made about 8 flights with our little girl, but none over 1,500 miles. I think, per D’s comment above, we’ll probably take our first International trip to Ireland & England. We have family in both places.

  3. Hello from The Mom Loop Comment Follow. I would want to wake up in London. The last time I went was 1998, just before getting pregnant with baby #1. And I haven’t been on an airplane since! 🙂

    1. I understand, Shannon. My wife, little girl and I have only flown for family related trips (weddings) since the baby came. My wife had just visited London right before we met. My old international job had me in London all the time and I love it. What did you like the most about it?

  4. I love the you read books about rabbits before you little one got to visit them. Both you and Shannon are such amazing parents.

    1. Thank you so much, Deidre. Our little girl told me all about bunnies last night when I was reading to and tucking her in. She’s just turned 3 and this is her first pre-school, but it’s amazing how much she learns and retains. Plus she got to pet a real bunny! 😉

  5. Travel is the thing I love to do more than anything in the world. I’ve been to lots of typical vacation spots like France and England, but I really liked Iceland and the Philippines. I don’t have children and my significant other and I have decided not to. So I don’t have to think about planning so much for travel beyond the money aspect. But that doesn’t mean I can afford to go anywhere my heart desires (don’t I wish it was so). My dream location? I’d love to wake up in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow.

    1. That sounds, cool, Todra. I have several friends who spent time in Kuala Lumpur and loved it. That said, I have always loved old ruins and historical sites… religious and otherwise. My wife and I visited some off-the-beaten-path rarely visited 3,000+ year old mounds (inside them, I mean) in Ireland before our baby was born. So if I was in that part of the world I’d also want to visit places like Angkor Wat in Cambodia.

  6. Well now I want to know what had you living in such amazing locations?

I was lucky to have a wonderful grandfather and aunt who took me all over Europe every summer when I was growing up. But it’s been over 10 years since I’ve been able to satiate my wanderlust (not counting road trips to see concerts here and there). Now that I have a 5-year-old, God only knows when I’ll get to scratch that itch again! My list just keeps growing in the meantime.

Regarding your reply to Todra, I too love religious and historical sites! The Vatican was one of my favorite places to tour. All that art and history? Breathtaking!

    1. Well hello, Erin. Two visits from you in as many days. I’m flattered. Per your question about all my travel, my father was an international jewel thief. If the IRS or INTERPOL is reading this, I’m just kidding. He was in… um… international business. Yep, that’s it. In Europe I lived in Vienna and Amsterdam, and as an adult I traveled internationally for work and pleasure. I’d tell you more, but then I’d have to kill you. LOVE travel, but not doing much since the baby arrived 3 years ago, either. Sounds like you had a super grandfather & aunt! Thanks for dropping by.

  7. oh a cruise ship…wouldn’t that be nice?!

    wm

    1. Have you been on a cruise ship? I’ve been lucky enough to be on both huge ones and small live-aboard dive boats. Waking each morning in a new spot is really cool. I suppose I was picturing a sort of cruise ship (maybe a dirigible) that could go anywhere in the world, even over land? 🙂

  8. Not travelled abroad since the kids, largely because of the expense. If I could wake up anywhere tomorrow it would be Italy or the south of France. Love travel and really miss it, though I wouldn’t trade it for being a father.

    1. Yeah, Tom. I feel the same way. My big travel days ceased since becoming a dad. Eventually we’ll take our girl on trips abroad. Yes, the Côte d’Azur is lovely. Once helped host an event in Cannes and had a great week there. Italy is a country I’d love to spend more time in. Where are your favorite spots?

  9. Reading the emotion of fatherhood!! It’s quite different from motherhood for sure 🙂

    1. Thanks, Olivia. Good different or bad different? 😉 Don’t answer that.
