Does your Man Smell? Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Nose!

Let’s face it. Sometimes we guys need help.

One of my most popular posts concerned the many clothes guys should never wear. The truth is, many of us are a bit fashion challenged, and that deficiency continues into the arena of fragrances. So you better speak now or forever hold your nose!

Does your man smell? Speak now or forever hold your nose! How do you prefer your man smell? Do you enjoy the subtle scent of exotic cologne wafting from his neck or wrist? Or is your favorite the clean freshness of Ivory soap as he emerges from the shower? Or perhaps it’s no scent at all, except his own?

Here’s the thing, most of us guys want you to think we smell good… or at least not bad. But I must confess to being somewhat clueless about what a good scent really is? I’m guessing it varies by person, and even the same scent doesn’t work on everyone, right?

I picked up the latest issue of Men’s Health and was assaulted with page after page of ads hawking the latest fragrances. I decided to check some of them out and here’s a quick run down of a few… some new to me. I liked the 3 with the asterisks pretty well.

Here are some I recently gave a sniff:

  • F by Ferragamo Black * – A dressed up, sophisticated fragrance of lavender, black pepper, and amber wood.
  • D&G Le Bateleur * – This mix of cardamon, coriander, and cedar will seduce any woman. (says Men’s Health)
  • Coach for Men *ย – Modern, rugged, adventurous, and bold, with notes of grapefruit, Darjeeling tea, and cedarwood.
  • Shiseido Zen for Men * – An expressive, modern scent of spicy woods layered with exotic fruits and musk.
  • Tom Ford Private Blend Italian Cypress * – Hints of spearmint, clove, basil, and patchouli make this sophisticated & elegant, and the most expensive fragrance on this list.
  • Cartier Roadster * – An invigorating, dramatic scent with notes of mint, bergamont, patchouli, and vanilla.
  • Old Spice (original) * – I’m a traditionalist. Plus their commercials make me laugh, and it smells like my dad. ๐Ÿ™‚

My strategy has always been to let my wife pick my cologne since smelling good to her is is what’s most important. She is, by the way, in the camp that likes how I smell both with and without a scent… or so she claims. How about you?

What is your favorite scent?

  1. My favorite scent for my husband right now is David Beckham Instinct. Fancy schmancy. Don’t you just love the compelling names they come up with for these?

    1. Well, who wouldn’t want to smell like David Beckham? Now if I could just look like him (sans the tattoos). ๐Ÿ˜‰

  2. Polo….he’s worn it since ’94 and I’ve always loved it

    1. Hey, Kathy. So is that the original I guess in the green bottle? Was talking about that one last night with my wife. I’m sure many of us wore it at one time.

      1. Original Polo is AWESOME!

I also like RSVP (by Kenneth Cole), Safari and Aramis.

        1. You like the classics, eh? I’ve probably tried most of these in the past. Right now my favorite is John Varvatos Vintage (I also like his original John Varvatos by John Varvatos, as well).

  3. Soap all the way!

    1. So that clean fresh from the shower smell, eh? Any particular soap? Ivory, Irish Spring,… ? One of my go to gifts for my dad was soap on a rope like this one from English Leather:

    I love Armani Code ๎”

    1. I’ve heard from several people that Armani Code is really good. I tried the ones above out at a Sephora and at Macy’s, but didn’t try this one. I’ll definitely go give it a sniff. Thanks, MaryBeth!

  4. I like a dot of cologne between a man’s shoulder blades/neck area after a soapy shower & deoderant. As the day goes on, the musk combined with natural man scent cures to the perfect combination of rugged-clean-man smell. But that’s just me… ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Interesting. So the place to put it (after getting all clean and fresh) is on the back between the shoulder-blades near the neck? I’ve hears of using pulse points, but not that one. I’ll have to test that out on my wife.

I know you didn’t mean “musk” like this, but your use of the word made me laugh. My wife and I talked last night about what we wore when we were in college. My freshman year I wore Jovan Musk. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  5. Personal hygiene is very important to keep the body fresh and clean. Cleanliness can contribute to overall health.

    1. That’s certainly true. While many women may appreciate a man’s natural scent, I doubt many would wish he not apply appropriate (and regular) hygiene to his routine. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  6. The only thing that matters to me is that he doesn’t smell like a mule’s rear end. He and I occassionally end up borrowing each others deodorant, so the type of smell is no big deal to me as long as its not foul. I suspect he feels the same way!

    1. So… do we (and by “we” I mean “you”) have experience smelling a mule’s rear end, Susan? Perhaps on a long hot ride up from Phantom Ranch at the Grand Canyon? ๐Ÿ˜‰ Yeah, guys need to know that basic hygiene is a must. A little sweat is usually fine, I’m guessing as long as we’ve showered somewhat recently?

  7. I love when a man smells like the ocean, like he just got done surfing. Or like he has been working – not BO , but that smell of work – fresh sweat. Maybe I am crazy, but I would rather have my man smell like good clean soap and/or work than anything else.

    1. I don’t think that’s crazy at all, Rayanne. I think (with the BO qualification firmly in place) many women prefer a clean fresh and/or slightly sweating natural scent to some overpowering cologne. I find teens are the worst at spraying on huge amounts of scent?

  8. I like Millionaire from Paco Rabane (gold and black bottle) – smells lush

    1. I’ve seen that at the stores, Jane, but have never given it a sniff. We’ll def go check it out!

  9. All I have to say is I wish my husband would wear unscented deodorant and lotion. For some reason, the scents they add to them are so powerfully bad. He has some lotion now that is so strong that the smell doesn’t come out after washing. I think I would just prefer clean and no scent since it’s hard to find a fragrance not too strong.

    1. Yes, Rebekah, some of the young men’s products seem to be the most guilty of this, e.g. Axe and such. I cringe when I walk buy guy’s body sprays at the grocery. Guys do NOT need body sprays… in fact no one does. I wear a small amount of cologne (John Varvatos Vintage & also his original self named variety), but hopefully it’s not too overpowering.

  10. I am so glad you shared this on my mommy meme! This was one of the most viewed submissions from last week.

Check out your feature here: http://www.crystalandcomp.com/2011/11/the-mommy-club-share-your-resources-and-solutions-17/

I can not wait to see what you share this week.

    1. For real, Crystal? Thank you. I actually have some more “helpful” posts I should have used. I was just being kinda silly. Not all of my blogs can make you cry, though I’m probably due for a serious one after these latest batch of silliness.
