I suspect my late father never changed a diaper. He as a great man, but he grew up in a time where fathers were less involved in such matters. I on the other hand pride myself in my ability to remove a soiled diaper, clean, cream the wee ones bottom and put on a fresh one in 30 seconds flat. Sort of a home version of a Nascar pit crew challenge. The only think about being a modern dad that's bothered me is carrying my wife's diaper bag when my daughter and I are out and about together. Many, many years ago in a land far, far away... well, in Florida... a baby boy was born on this day. My father who took this photograph of my mother and me, passed away before he was able to meet his beautiful grand-daughter. If he can still see us, then this morning he saw my barely two year old girl sing... really sing... "happy birthday to you" to her daddy.

Our two year old girl loves Tinkerbell, and I think she'll really enjoy all of the sights and sounds of the Renaissance festival next spring... especially the fairies! Is it just me or are we introducing technology to our toddlers too soon? Could there be a developmental impact? Wouldn't they be better off playing outside on a nice day? Maybe mom or dad could run along side them as they ride a bike for the first time or camp out together in the back yard overnight in sleeping bags - flashlights being the only battery operated devices present.

I'm beginning to wonder if maybe I'm going to have to hand in my fuddy-duddy credentials? I watched the Katy Perry and Elmo music clip that caused a bit stir today. It was pulled from the upcoming Sesame Street season after it drew complaints from parents. I hate to say it, but honestly I don't see what the big deal is. No, that's not a cleavage joke.

A Walk to Remember

The walk about which I am writing doesn’t concern the film of that name, though both are love stories. The walk I’m writing about is a trip down the isle of a church that my wife and I took four years ago today. And really I’m writing of a journey… about the independent paths we walked alone to get to that wedding, and the walk we’ve taken hand in hand ever since.

From what I've heard about kids at this age on Christmas morning, after opening all of her thoughtfully selected and carefully wrapped gifts... I should expect her to toss them aside and begin playing with the gift boxes instead. I've come up with a practical solution for Christmas this year. I'm going to do my toddler's gift shopping at U-Haul. For a reasonable amount of money I can get her a really nice selection of small, medium and large boxes, as well as some bubble wrap and a roll or two of packing tape.
