As many of you know, I’ve been offered an exciting opportunity to write for the premier parenting site, Disney-owned Babble.com. To be clear, I’m not abandoning this site or all the great friendships I’ve made here.
I’ll simply be writing in both places. I’m honored and very excited. If you’ve not visited Babble.com before, or if you missed my first week of posts on their site, here’s a brief summary. I’d love to know what you think?
I’m curious. Do any of you tell people a lie when they ask how you and your spouse met? I’ve a confession to make. I used to lie about how my wife and I met.
I have some friends who told their in-laws they met at church. The thing is, I was there when they met and it was a bartender and not a minister in charge of the flock.
So, what was my lie? Continue reading »
Most of the dads I know will read that title and go, “Well, duh!” Surprisingly though, some of you have told me you’ve never changed a diaper! A few said it with an air of manly pride, and others confessed it a bit more sheepishly. You have never changed a diaper? Really?
How is that even possible? It must mean you have never been alone with your child. What did you do; wait for mommy to come home and save you from your stinky fate? Or did you recruit some innocent bystander to do the dirty deed? Yes, still talking diapers here. Continue reading »
Did this happen to you? Before having our first child, I had all kinds of ideas concerning what I was and wasn’t going do as a parent. Here’s one simple example: Like many of you, when we found out my wife was pregnant, we started making plans for decorating a nursery for our baby. As you might imagine, my ideas and my wife’s weren’t exactly the same, to say the least.
We didn’t know the sex of our baby yet, and since we also clearly couldn’t know the sex of any future children (for whom I thriftily thought we’d use the same baby stuff) I felt the nursery decor should be unisex. Logical, right? A nice Blade Runner-style black & white monochrome ought to be just the ticket? But it sure didn’t turn out that way. Who would you guess changed my mind? How many think it was my wife? Continue reading »
Did you hear about the recent stink raised about an ad showing a dad bottle-feeding his 6 month old child? No? Well, it was in New Zealand, so a bit far away from some of us. The topic, however, is near and dear to many of our hearts. Any of you who read my post “A Dad Weighs in on Breastfeeding” know I have strong opinions on the subject.
For a variety of reasons many of you reading this did not or could not feed your babies breast milk. The last thing in the world I want to do is make someone feel bad over choices they made in the past, or a situation in which perhaps they had no choice. That would be pointless. So why am I treading into this touchy territory yet again? Continue reading »
