Do you use Facebook or Twitter? Well, of course you do! You don’t live under a rock. Even your mother is on Facebook. I know… I friended her!

I have a question: When you see someone post a comment or tweet using special characters like ♥ or ☺ do you think, “✖ how obnoxious?” or do you think “✔ that’s cute, how can I do that?” If it’s the latter, this blog is for you. ☻

There’s some evidence using these characters (with restraint) may help draw attention to your post, and given the volume of data coming at us online that could be the difference between your comment being seen or falling between the quickly scrolling cracks.

Because of the 140 character limitation on Twitter, you can also whisper longer sweet nothings in your tweets if you substitute to “I ♥ U” for “I love you”.  Some of you hate this don’t you? Leave a comment and tell me how ☹ it makes you.

There are tools that can help you with this built into some of the twitter applications. Or you can use keyboard shortcuts, e.g. Alt + 0169 in windows or option – g on a mac will get you the © symbol. And then there’s daddy’s way…

If you think it might be fun to spice up your comments, simply bookmark this page and you can come back and just cut and paste any of the following to your ♥’s content. I didn’t include all, but here are some I find fun. Give it a try in my comments!

  1. I have an emoticons app on the iPod. 
But I think they aren’t seen on actual computers.
I like them in small amounts. But not as an entire message.

    1. One can definitely over do it. I’ve seen those cool colored ones like you used above on my iPhone, but on my computer (now) I can’t see them. Thanks for dropping by, Renee!

  2. Beware… ☠…..I may be using these a lot now. Bwah ha hah ha……☞insert evil laugh.

    1. Oh no… have I created a monster. Stick to the ♥ in your messages to me and I’ll be happy! ☺

p.s. Do you play A chess?

  3. I do believe you may very well have started something here! It is pretty cool though. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Thanks, Mitzi. It’s not my most exciting post, to say the least. But I hoped at least a few might find it helpful. I’m always looking for someplace to copy and past these from. Now I’ve created my own cheat sheet. ☺

  4. Hmm, it never really occurred to me to be annoyed. Unless the tweet is full of those block things. Those just don’t make sense to me. Am I just “missing out”?

    PS I’m a ♌

    1. Yeah, there is one guy that sends out huge block text tweets. One is cute. EVERYONE is annoying. Oh, and I’m a ♎.

  5. Everything in moderation I say. A little can go a long way, too much and I can’t stand to read the post. I think it’s spam. I have seem people to this alot: {{squeal}} that can be cute too when used once a month. I am sure I annoy everyone because I say the word cute about 100 times a day. Compared to Japan, where I lived for years, I use it on a fraction of the amount a young Japanese girl uses that word “Kawaii”.

    1. A little can definitely go a long way. It doesn’t bother me much if a few are used occasionally, but some people go ✰♡*•˛❤˛•*✰ crazy ✰♡*•˛❤˛•*✰ with it. As for Japanese culture, I’m no expert, but 可愛い or kawaii seems to have been all the rage since the 70’s. The trend that never dies? What brought you to Japan for so long, Kristen?

I think its funny how some show on y computer and some don’t… I’m a big fan of the ♥ – especially on #FF posts for twitter but again… everything in moderation ☺

    1. I agree the ♥ is my favorite, especially when I tweeting my wife.

  6. I love special characters, but i guess that SOMETIMES it can get annoying.

    ✖ marks the spot

    1. Yeah Miranda, some people go a bit ✰♡*•˛❤˛•*✰ crazy ✰♡*•˛❤˛•*✰ with it, but except for Valentines day I try to limit myself to just a few a day. LOL. Thanks so much for dropping by! ☺

  7. I seriously need a defintion cheat sheet to go with the symbols. I have no idea when to use what.

    1. There is a pretty exhaustive list here: ☞ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miscellaneous_Symbols ☜. Hope that helps, Dana! ☺

  8. ❀Thanks!❀

    1. ✰♡*•˛❤˛•*✰ crazy ✰♡*•˛❤˛•*✰ You are very welcome, Jenn. Remember to use them in moderation. Do as I say, not as I do. ✰♡*•˛❤˛•*✰ crazy ✰♡*•˛❤˛•*✰

  9. this is great!!! I ❥ it !
    thanks for the tips!

    1. Just use them sparingly…. not everyone likes them. ☠

  10. This looks complicated. I just learned letters.

    1. LOL. As the next Martha I figured you’d just have your executive assistant tweet for you. Of course while the original Martha was in jail her EA went by another name, but we won’t go there. This is a family blog. Thanks for dropping by.

  11. I’m leaving myself a comment. Wanted to say 2 1/2 years old in reference to my daughter, but that’s 5 characters on Twitter… so now I can type 2½ using just 2 characters. Saved 3 characters. WooHoo! It’s the small things. 😉

    ½ – One half symbol
    ¼ – One quarter symbol

  12. I like your ideas, they bring spring into my thoughts.. there are always grander ways to write up a comment, as for me… standard 70’s style

    1. Thank you, Tono. Have a great week.

  13. But I think they aren’t seen on actual computers. Do you play A chess?

    1. You don’t see them in the post above? Odd. I see them on my laptop & desktop, in addition to iPhone. They are UTF-8 characters and most operating systems and browsers support them, but I’m certainly no expert. 🙂 Anyway, thanks for dropping by!

  14. Thanks for sharing! I love putting pictures in my posts.

    1. You are very welcome, Penelope. I’m glad you found them helpful. 🙂

    1. Okay. I feel I should know what that means, but I don’t. What is it? Not knowing is driving me ✰♡*•˛❤˛•*✰ crazy ✰♡*•˛❤˛•*✰!

  17. Same old stuff. But not the marvelous characters being used by UK Twitter users. Unfortunately, I cannot locate them on Google. I can only “trap” them one at a time when they are used by others.

    1. If you find a source of those “marvelous characters being used by UK Twitter users” please share. I suspect much of what you may be seeing are emoji keyboard characters accessed via a special “language” keyboard on smartphones.

  18. Take a look at FourFollow.com. It has a special character editor with lots of symbols that you can use to post tweets to Twitter.

    1. Will do. Thanks.

  19. Eu não consigo colocar nos meus pots como eu faço?? Eu uso o celular Android
